Every month RCND begins again the same way we began three decades ago.
Our Community Luncheon Roundtable unites 40–60 neighbors each month around a delicious free lunch and trustworthy conversation about our collective pursuit of nonviolence.
Community Circles offer a similar "front-porch" space in a different format. Several times each month (in-person and remotely, in English and en Español), all are welcome to share in a circle process centered on values that guide us.
For 33 years, we've met the inequitable human toll of Durham's violence in Annual Vigilsthat call every name. Community Vigils unite the same sacred attention, one life at a time, alongside surviving loved ones at sites of homicide.
Our vigil practice extends to long-term companionship for survivors of violent loss, including a monthly Grief Circle and Court Accompaniment for victims' families during homicide trials and other court proceedings.
We understand vigil as a practice of belonging, that unites all-of-us affected in One Life Witness.
Meeting violence with compassion includes responding to the harm we enact on neighbors who cause harm. Over 95% of neighbors we incarcerate return home, and deserve a community worth coming home to.
Returning Friends Durham empowers everyday folks to line that path home in material support and mutual friendship for neighbors exiting long-term incarceration.
The harm reflected on both sides of our courtrooms inspires us to restorative justice. RJ is a community-based alternative to the criminal legal system, that centers the needs of people and communities harmed by wrongdoing. Restorative Justice Durham invites people harmed and people responsible for harm into a process led by volunteer co-facilitators. Meeting in circles guided by shared values, we work together to create a plan to repair the harm as much as possible.
