We Line the Path Home Communal Support for Neighbors Returning from Incarceration
EACH YEAR, 700 NEIGHBORS return to Durham from our state and federal prison system. Some can count on existing family and community support during reentry, but many have little to none. All face substantial barriers to experiencing Durham as "home."
WELCOME BOXES Returning Friends Durham partners with the City's Welcome Home program to organize community-donated welcome boxes of essential items, to be distributed to folks during their first days home.
LINES OF CONNECTION Each Welcome Home box includes a cell phone with one month of service. RF Durham channels community donations to extend this (phone) line of connection to employment and support services through the crucial 2–3 months following release.
FOOD SECURITY RF Durham engages voluneers into weekly food deliveries that close the gap between Durham's food security resources and returning citizens who need them.
REENTRY TEAMS We collaborate within Durham's Local Reentry Council to gather reentry teams of 3–5 volunteers around "partners" exiting long-term incarceration. Teams offer a durable community of mutual support and friendship for neighbors during the first 18 months of their reentry journey.
