Our Core Practices

COMMUNITY LUNCHEON ROUNDTABLES

Picture
Held monthly since the Coalition’s founding in 1992 (with a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic), our Community Luncheon Roundtables provide a space to share information, hope, resources, and support in our collective pursuit of nonviolence.

A delicious lunch is always free. A typical luncheon draws a diverse group of 50-70 folks representing Durham’s civic institutions, neighborhoods, congregations, spiritual communities, schools, and non-profits. A list of our past topics is here.

REENTRY AND RECONCILIATION

Reconciliation and Reentry (R&R) Ministry is a partnership between community Faith Teams and Partners who have been recently released from prison.

Reentry Faith Teams welcome and support recently incarcerated neighbors as they rejoin our community.

Our Annual Homecoming Celebration joyfully welcomes neighbors home.

Reentry and Reconciliation practices restore wholeness to one another.

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE DURHAM

Restorative Justice is an alternative form of justice with deep roots in indigenous peacemaking.

We center the needs of the people and communities harmed by wrongdoing and provide an opportunity for people who have caused harm to take accountability for their actions and experience community belonging.

We use a process grounded in circles and guided by shared values to engage all those affected. Together, we create of a plan to repair the harm as much as possible.

VIGIL MINISTRY

Picture
RCND is rooted in Vigil Ministry. We gather around neighbors affected by violence in our community.

Community Vigils are a time to support the families of homicide victims. We gather at the site a loved one was taken to mourn, remember, and lament.

We offer a monthly Grief Circle for homicide co-victims to come together, mourn, and heal.

Our Annual Community Vigil offers a time for all of Durham to honor lives taken by violence.

One Life Witness is a practice of belonging.

Court Accompaniment provides volunteers to support victims' families during their loved one's homicide trial or other court proceedings.
